Financial Assistance for an Intensive Program

Nathaniel Benjamin ’17, a talented dual major in Mathematics and Secondary Education, needed assistance to participate in the immersive 9-week Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at Muhlenberg College during the summer of 2016.  It was a perfect fit for him, but he wouldn’t be able to work during that time.

A stipend from the Foundation allowed him to attend the intensive REU, where he realized that he truly enjoyed math research.  The program also sealed his decision to continue on to a Ph.D. in math.

Nathaniel Benjamin '17Having chosen KU because of its location and reputation for producing highly-qualified educators, Nathaniel found professors at the University who fostered his research and encouraged him, through independent study and individualized instruction courses, to pursue mathematics at the graduate level.

Nathaniel told us he was “very impressed by and appreciative” of the Foundation’s financial support to help students pursue academic research. In the fall of his senior year, he gave a colloquium talk about the REU program and his experiences there, while also preparing for the GREs, student teaching and applying to graduate programs.

The Foundation was delighted to further the aspirations of such a focused young man.
